Top Easter Tasks

Long weekends are the perfect opportunity to enjoy time in the garden.

Plant winter veges, pick tasty autumn fruit for delicious chutney's, fill your garden with beautiful bulbs and involve the kids in some garden planting fun!

Plant beautiful bulbs

Tulips, daffodils, hyacinths or freesias – whatever your bloom of choice, filling your piece of paradise with fragrant floral displays will bring joy on a daily basis. Autumn is the best time to plant and feed spring flowering bulbs. The best bulb varieties can sell out fast so make sure you get in early to your garden centre or online stores like NZ Bulbs.

Read our top picks and tips for beautiful bulbs here.

Grow more food

Replace the lost nutrients from those heavy growing seasons by adding in compost and sheep pellets. This will provide a healthy new foundation for your autumn and winter crops.

Check out top veges, flowers, herbs and fruit to plant now below:

Plant fruit faves

You can’t beat the aroma and flavour of fresh feijoas. This hardy and robust fruit is so easy to grow and provides you with an abundance of fruit from autumn to early winter.

Planting this Kiwi favourite now allows the roots to establish over winter in preparation for a growth spurt over spring. Choose a variety and plant in a sunny spot using Tui Garden Mix.

Autumn is also a great time to plant citrus including lemon, lime, orange and mandarin trees. Plant in the garden using Tui Garden Mix or fill pots on your deck with Tui Pot Power. Follow our Citrus Growing Guide

Restore your lawn

Sow a lush green lawn or to get your existing lawn looking top-notch. Check out our step by step guide for a beautiful lawn.

If you need to repair your lawn, restore it to its previous glory by repairing bare patches with the conveniently sized Tui Superstrike Lawn Seed Patch Pack

Autumn is also a good time to feed your lawn. A thick, healthy lawn stops broadleaf and other weeds from becoming established. Apply Tui LawnForce® All Purpose or Tui LawnForce® Rapid Green.

Pruning time

After you have finished harvesting summer's bounty it is a good time to give your fruit trees a tidy up. Reasons to prune include: to reduce the size of the tree for easier picking, to remove dead and diseased branches and stems, to allow more sunlight and air movement into the plant and to improve air movement to prevent pest and disease problems.

Once nectarines, peaches and plums have finished fruiting prune to shape and to remove any dead or diseased branches. Check out our Fruit Pruning Guide for more information.

Get the kids involved

Getting children into the garden is a wonderful way to teach them about nature and where their food comes from.

Planting crops that give quick results will help keep them enthusiastic when getting started. Quick wins include radish, lettuce, silverbeet and spinach. Plant some flowers like pansies, petunia and polyanthus for some fun colour too.
