Hi, we moved to our property last April and the 3 Feijoa trees had a bumper crop which was well used. However, this year we have a little fruit on 1 tree and none on the other 2. We had lots of flowers and bees but don't know why we have no fruit. any Ideas?

Hi Vonnie, there could be several reasons for no fruit. Feijoas are pollinated mainly by birds who come in a pluck the red stamens and in doing so, pollinate the flowers. If the birds are unable to fly through the canopy of the tree to reach the flowers, the flowers will not be pollinated. Are there cats and dogs present that could deter the birds? Also if you have frost at the time of flowering then that can affect fruiting. Try giving the trees a light prune and open up the inside of the canopy. This can be done now or in early spring when the risk of frost has passed. Feijoas fruit at the base of new seasons growth so light trimming is beneficial. Your trees will benefit from feeding with a balanced fertiliser such as Tui Citrus food in early spring, this will promote flowering and also improve fruit flavour. Mulch around your trees in spring with a suitable organic mulch such as Tui Mulch & Feed or compost to help conserve soil moisture and improve soil structure. Lianne.
