Why is our orange tree not fruiting as well as last year?

  Waikato
  February

Q.

Hi Tui, we have a Newall Orange tree which fruited well last year, but this year has only produced fruit at the back nearest the wooden fence. It has been fed and watered the same as last year. It's been planted about three years. It is perfectly healthy.

Hi Maureen and Bruce, sometimes fruit trees can be cyclical and will fruit well one year, then the next not so well. Citrus can be cyclical especially mandarins. Other reasons for lighter yields are frosts at the time of flowering, make sure your tree is protected from frost. Pollinators do not work in cold, windy, wet weather, if there was wet spell at the time of flowering, then fruit set won't be as good. Heat and plenty of water brings on flowering in citrus, with the hot weather we have been having you may get a better crop this coming season. The possible reason the fruit along the fence line setting is because it is more sheltered and protected from adverse weather. The Tui Team.
