When can I transplant my potted rose into the ground?

  Wellington
  March

Q.

Hi, can a rose that's in a pot be transplanted into the ground and when can I do this? Would it have to be pruned first? Also, what fertiliser would it need? Your advice would be greatly appreciated.

Frank Shelley

A.

Hi Frank, container grown roses can be transplanted at any time. Prepare the soil with Tui Rose & Shrub Mix, dig the hole twice as big as the root ball and plant to the same depth as it was in the pot.

Keep it well watered and apply Tui Rose Food in spring and in autumn before the plant goes dormant over winter. If transplanting at this time of the year the rose probably won’t put on much growth until next season now. Make sure any spent flowers are removed.
