What is causing green and cream ridges on my tomatoes?

Q.

Hi, this year a lot of my tomatoes have semi hard green and cream ridges running down the sides. Could you please advise what is causing this? We have been growing tomatoes for five years and never had this before. Thanks for your help, Marian.

A.

These green and cream ridges are the result of too much sunlight and/or too much potassium (potash). Too much potassium can be be counter balanced with a nitrogen rich fertiliser such as Tui Nitrophoska Fertiliser.
