What is causing 'blisters' on our grape vine leaves?

  Bay of Plenty
  October

Q.

Hi Tui, our red grape vine has developed curly leaf type appearance this year. We have leaf curl on our peach and nectarine trees and so am assuming it is similar. Thanks.

Terry Bourk

A.

Hi Terry, that is Blister Mite and not leaf curl. The mites overwinter in the leaf scales and bark of the vine and in spring emerge and feed on new spring growth. Use a horticultural spraying oil to eradicate the mites, repeat sprays will be required to make sure the lifecycle of the mite is controlled. Collect up any fallen leaves, especially in autumn as the mites can overwinter in soil leaf litter as well. Dispose of fallen leaves and pruning's in the rubbish or burn, do not compost or leave beneath the vine. Over winter maintain a winter spray programme to eradicate any overwintering mite eggs. The Tui Team.
