What is a good pollinator for my feijoa Kakariki?

  Otago
  November

Q.

Hi, which feijoa should I plant with KAKARIKI. Mine is close to flowering but my other bush, KAITERI has no buds yet. Any suggestions about another earlier alternative please. Thanks.

Geraldine Cooke

A.

Hi Geraldine, Kaiteri is a good pollinator for Kakariki, both flower at the same time. Any feijoa that is early to mid season flowering will be a suitable pollinator. Look for Unique, an early to mid season self fertile variety, or Anatoki, also an early to mid season variety. Consider why your Kaiteri isn't flowering, feed your feijoas with a fruit tree fertiliser such as Tui Citrus food in spring. Feijoas fruit at the base of new seasons growth, trim the trees to ensure new fruiting wood each season, and protect from frost, if in a frost prone area don't prune until spring when the risk of frost has passed.
