My raspberries are taking over the garden, what should I do?

  Otago

Q.

Hi, help! I planted a raspberry cane 2 years ago and it's taking over my garden. I'm thinking I will have to spray it to kill it before it takes over completely. Your article suggests this shouldn't happen. Thanks.

Hi Hazel, remove suckers by digging them out each season so this doesn't happen. If you spray them you are likely to kill your mother plant. Winter is a good time to remove suckers or dormant canes before they burst into life. Give the sucker crowns away to friends and family, pot up for future plantings, give to a community garden or school, or dispose of in the rubbish. Regards, Lianne, Tui Team.
