My onions are going to seed, should I harvest them?

  Auckland
  December

Q.

Hi, my onions are growing seed heads. Should I leave them or harvest them? Thanks.

Tony Harkins

A.

Hi Tony, harvest the onions that are going to seed and use them first, they won't put on any more growth, and will still taste fine, but won't store well once bolted. Bolting occurs when a plant is stressed, it could be temperature changes, too hot, too cold, insufficient watering, and, some varieties are more susceptible to bolting than others. It is natures way of saying it is time to reproduce to save themselves. Lianne.
