I planted strawberries in August & now they're flowering, should I still pick the flowers?

Q.

Hello there, I planted strawberry plants in August and they are now starting to flower (late September). Should I prune the early flowers, and if so, when should I stop doing that?

Marie Connolly

A.

Hi Marie

You shouldn't pick the flowers now, as it's the right time for your strawberries to be flowering.

Picking flowers should be done in winter as there aren't many bees around at this time to pollinate the flowers, so they wont form properly into nice big strawberries.

Feed your strawberries every four weeks over the key growing season with Tui Strawberry Food.

Thanks, Tui Team
