Q.
We have a feijoa tree that is approx 3yrs old. In it's last fruiting it fruited the best it ever has and now it has hardly any leaves and a lot of dead wood. How do I revive it? Located in Canterbury but has been a very mild winter and no snow this year.

Hi Angela, when feijoas shed leaves it is normally a sign of water stress, either too much or not enough. If your plant is in a container it may have used all the nutrients from in the soil, so an application of Tui NovaTec Premium fertiliser will help, or repot the plant in fresh potting mix. If your plant is in the ground, suggest applying Tui NovaTec Premium fertiliser now and giving the plant a haircut – a light prune, this will remove some of the fruiting wood for this year, however it will stimulate new branches for future years. Regular applications of Tui Organic Seaweed Plant Tonic will also give your tree a boost. Check out our Feijoa Growing Guide for more information.
