Q.
I have absolutely no worms in my garden or vege garden and yet the soil is healthy with plenty of compost and pea straw added regularly. How do I attract worms?

Hi Mhairi, adding organic matter to the soil is a good start to attract earthworms, there could be several reasons you aren't seeing any worms, the soil could be too wet, too dry or too cold - I think it is probably the latter, too cold at the moment. The addition of sheep pellets is a great way to encourage earthworm activity, they come up for the lanolin in the wool and drag it back down into the soil which improves soil structure and creates aeration for plant roots. Other things you can do are dig in your kitchen scraps of fruit and vegetable peelings, dig a hole to a spade depth and bury them in the garden, earthworms will find their way to the food source. Keep doing what you are doing, it is important to continually add organic matter to the soil, an application of blood and bone may also help to speed up the breakdown of the organic matter that you are applying to improve your soil structure.
