Hi Tui, can I use Epsom Salts in the garden on fruit trees and veges etc? If so, how often? Many thanks.

Usually Epsom salts is used as a remedy when plants show deficiencies of magnesium in the form yellowing of the leaves and green veins. Most fertilisers will have the correct ratio of magnesium to sustain feeding for up to 3 months. However, plants will benefit from an application once a month diluted in water at the recommended rate. It can be used as a soil drench or foliar feed.

We suggest you check first before applying additional Epsom salts to make sure the plants actually need the extra magnesium. If you are adding plenty of organic matter to your garden such as compost, as well as fertiliser then there is likely to be enough magnesium in the soil. Only use it if there is an obvious deficiency. The only way to really know if your plants are deficient in any nutrient is to do a simple soil test. Soil test kits are available from garden centres and DIY stores.
