Can I plant celery in autumn?

  Waikato
  April

Q.

Hi, can I plant celery now or will the frost kill it?

Zach

A.

Hi Zach, celery is best grown in spring and autumn and plants can be frost tender, it will depend how severe your frosts are in the Waikato as to when you plant. Sow seeds in warmer regions from January to May, in cooler regions October to January, seeds are slow to germinate and can take up to a month to emerge. If you are in a cool climate region then it is best to have seedlings planted out by mid autumn (April), in warmer frost free regions seedling plants can continue to be planted out until mid winter (July).
